We can play. Women who changed the world.
Grace O'Malley, also known as the pirate queen. Was she born earlier or later than the year in which Nellie Bly, an American journalist traveled around the world in 72 days? And again, was that date before or after Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union?
You will be confronted with the above questions when you play the game "We can play. Women who changed the world" game. The game has 96 cards of women who played or are playing major roles in politics, science, culture and social life. On one side of the cards is a description of the fact that made the woman famous and her name. There are also very beautifully designed portraits on the cards. On the back is the same story but with a year added.
In the game, you have to try to put the cards in the right order in front of you. You start with 1 card and on your turn you draw a card from the deck and read the story. Then you decide to put the card to the left of the card you have (you think the year of the new card is before the year of the card you already have) or to the right (if you think the year is more recent). After making that choice, turn the card over so you can see the year. If you got it right, you may take another card (you don't have to, you can also pass and then the turn goes to the next player) and place it in the right place. If that is also correct then it is the next player's turn. If you get it wrong, you must turn in the cards in front of you and the card you got wrong is your new starting card.
In addition to the 96 person cards, there are also 5 cards with an anonymous person. These cards can be used to avoid having to turn in all the cards in front of you in case of a wrong answer. The winner is the one who first places a seventh card in front of him on the correct spot. Once someone has 6 cards, the other players may choose from the top 3 cards which card that player should see fit to place. This way you can make things difficult for the leader in the game.
The game is played within about 20 minutes and plays pretty standard. A solid timeline game. The nice thing about the game, besides the nice design, is the educational aspect. I had never heard of many of the 96 women, and I also found placing the various discoveries in time difficult. For example, in what year was Kevlar invented or when was Ruth Bader Ginsberg appointed to the Supreme Court in America?
It is an entertaining snack with an educational character. If you play the game a number of times you quickly know which card should be where because of the limited number of cards and then the fun, especially for the other players, quickly wears off. The times I played it the game led to the necessary surprise about when something took place and also to thinking (and discussion) about which Dutch women should be added in a Dutch edition.
